Many technical professionals will never be assigned to positions of formal authority. Yet, even without direct authority, they have the potential to provide tremendous, value-added technical leadership to their organizations.

Leadership Skills for Technical Professionals is a powerful process that we have conducted around the world since 2001. The program prepares technical professionals to progress as leaders along the technical career track, as shown. It focuses particularly on the transition from Stage II: Technical Specialist to Stage III: Technical Leader.

Career Stage Model for Technical Professionals

As each leader makes the journey from the specialized focus of a Technical Specialist to the broader leadership orientation of a Technical Leader, he or she must develop conceptual and relational competencies. Milestones along the way include greater capability in the competencies of:

Influence. Leveraging expertise by exerting a broader influence within the organization.
Innovation. Fostering an environment that explores untapped possibilities and supports innovation.
Challenge. Being willing to raise issues and challenge assumptions – even if it creates conflict – for the benefit of the organization.
Conflict Management. Managing their own conflicts and facilitating conflict resolution with others.
Consulting. Serving as internal consultants, expanding beyond giving technical advice to anticipating and addressing complex business issues and relationships.
Mentoring. Serving as mentors and advisers to younger or less experienced technical professionals, sharing their perspectives and expertise.
Facilitation. Facilitating project teams and work groups, recognizing how to build collaborative work relationships that produce outstanding results.
